Barossan brothers John and James Lienert have transformed the family farm on Barossa’s western edge into a viticultural wonderland. The role of maker has fallen to James, as has grower to John. A symbiotic coupling of siblings sharing a simple approach to growing grapes and making wine. Promoting the wellbeing of their vineyards through regenerative agriculture and a wholistic commitment to sustainability, Lienert Vineyards have positioned themselves as leaders in promoting diversity of clonal expression across Barossa’s heritage varieties whilst expanding their portfolio to include Malbec, Roussanne, Piqpoul and Fiano. In 2023, they purchased the historic 'Summers Vineyard' at Eden Valley which includes established plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Lienert Vineyards is emblematic of all that is good and exciting about Australia’s best known wine region.
The family planted their first Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1891. This makes the Cabernet Sauvignon the oldest family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the world and the Shiraz the oldest in the Langhorne Creek region.
The original plantings by current owner Guy Adams’ great-great grandfather led to the estate known as the Metala Vineyards, recognised as one of the most famous in South Australia. The business has evolved from five generations of grape growing tradition and, at 220 Ha, is the largest family owned vineyard in the region.
Langhorne Creek is the largest premium cool climate grape growing region in Australia and for years has been one of the wine industry’s best kept secrets. All wines are entirely estate grown and made.
The wine styles are focused on structure, texture and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the main varietals as well as Malbec and Chardonnay.
With over 20 years Export experience the wines are now in India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, USA, Netherlands, UK, Italy, New Zealand and Canada. In fact more than 80% of sales are Export. An experienced team can assist in all aspects of compliance and shipping.
Each parcel of grapes is fermented in small batches to ensure the potential from every aspect of the vineyard is maximised. Depending on the batch, we can vary the yeasts, fermentation temperatures, skin plunging regimes, and the total time spent on skins.
Again, patience and time is the essence, to allow for slow and complete extraction of colour and flavour.
The restraint taken ensures firm but not bitter tannins, and the very old vines maintain a wonderful natural acidity to provide structure and backbone. Metala Wines work on an aged release program, ensuring our wines are food ready before release, which gives us a great advantage in the on trade.
